I’m thrilled to finally share the long overdue photos and details of our Hollywood Regency living room remodel! While I’m calling this post “Before and After,” we’re still in the process of replacing our family room furniture… but more on that later.
Before: Dark and Heavy Living Room Design
Let’s start with the before shots. As you can see in the photos below, the original space felt quite heavy and traditional:
A massive stone fireplace dominated the room
Dark wood shutters blocked natural light
Warm-toned walls and finishes felt dated
Vintage-style ceiling fans reminded me of an old-fashioned ice cream parlour!
Lightening Up the Space
We wanted a lighter, brighter Hollywood Regency look. Here’s what we did:
✅ Removed the heavy stone fireplace
✅ Painted the walls a crisp Benjamin Moore White Dove
✅ Sanded the hardwood floors to reveal their natural color
✅ Replaced both ceiling fans with a stunning Visual Comfort Gramercy chandelier (I’m obsessed!)
I’m still debating whether to move the chandelier to center it above the dining table. My husband wants to wait until we finish selecting our living room furniture before we start moving fixtures around.
Updating the Windows
The heavy wood shutters were swapped out for sleek Roman shades from The Shade Store. Their design team made the process incredibly easy—from showroom visit to in-home measurement and installation.
If you’re considering a window treatment upgrade, I highly recommend ordering samples from The Shade Store’s website and experiencing their personalized service.
Custom Touches: Fireplace & Built-Ins
One of my favorite parts of this remodel is our modern fireplace makeover. We worked with Joseph, a talented rendering artist on Fiverr, to design a new Hollywood Regency fireplace with beautiful moldings and architectural details. American Masonry in Fort Worth brought his renderings to life!
Although we originally planned gorgeous arched moldings around the fireplace, we had to pause that part of the project due to budget (the quotes came in at $24,000 for seven arches!). It’s definitely something I’d love to revisit one day.
Hidden Storage Details
We also enclosed the open space beside the fireplace, creating a custom hidden cabinet that’s perfect for keys, phones, and Mr. Cupcake’s leashes and dog accessories. It’s been such a practical addition!
Dining Area Updates
I had originally been dreaming of William Haines Hollywood Regency chairs and table like the ones in my design renderings, but they were a bit out of budget. Instead, we chose a chic white and black dining table paired with Jonathan Adler dining chairs—an affordable yet stylish option.
Still Deciding on Family Room Furniture
We’re still finalizing our living room furniture selections. Here’s what’s currently on my shortlist:
-
A sectional leather sofa (considering this one)
-
A cozy green velvet or white boucle accent chair
So many beautiful choices… decisions, decisions!
